Rio Salado provides information, resources, and services which promote a successful learning experience for students with documented disabilities. Depending upon the disability and the resources Rio Salado has available, students with documented disabilities may receive accommodations that include, but are not limited to, sign language interpreters, text in alternative format, readers/scribes, and extended test taking time.

Sign Up for Disability Services

A student wishing to register for services must meet MCCCD admissions requirements, or be enrolled as an MCCCD student, and must provide Disability Resources and Services (DRS) with required documentation verifying the nature and extent of the disability prior to receiving any accommodation. The DRS Manager is responsible for evaluating documentation and determining accommodation eligibility.

We have recently changed our processes for registering and requesting accommodations. If you are new to RSC, please take a moment to complete an application within DRS Connect to get started with registering with the DRS office. Please register as a new student. If you have received accommodation within our office, please sign into DRS Connect using your MEID and password to start requesting your accommodations for the current semester.

Academic adjustments (accommodations) must be requested each semester even if you had them previously. Please note that every time DRS Connect asks for your "username" and your "student I.D.", both terms refer to your MCCCD MEID number. The "password" will be the same private password you created originally with your MEID.

About Disability Resources

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires institutions of higher education to provide reasonable accommodations to those with documented disabilities, provided an undue hardship is not created. A reasonable accommodation is the provision of an auxiliary aid, or modification to the course or program, that will allow access for the student with a documented disability to the educational program, material, activity, or degree. Examples include:

  • Making existing facilities readily accessible to, and usable by, persons with disabilities.
  • Acquisition or modification of equipment or devices.
  • Appropriate adjustments of exam times.
  • Provision of qualified readers, note takers and sign language interpreters.
  • Provision of alternative print formats.

It is the responsibility of the student to inform the institution of his or her need for accommodations.

Disability Services

The Disability Resources & Services (DRS) office coordinates and provides a variety of services based the student's individual needs. Examples of some of these services include the following:

  • Academic accommodations
  • Faculty consultation
  • A variety of reasonable accommodations
  • Contact with agencies servicing people with disabilities.
  • Special testing arrangements: extended time, reader or separate room
  • Special classroom seating
  • Assistance with obtaining alternate format or large print textbooks and Braille materials for the visually impaired
  • Use of assistive technology
  • Information and referral

The DRS also provides adaptive computer equipment and software specifically designed for people with disabilities.


The DRS provides assistance to student's who have either a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. Examples of disabilities include: physical disabilities, dyslexia, visual impairments, hearing impairments, AIDS/HIV, psychological disorders, learning disorders, and traumatic brain injuries. To receive services students must provide the DRS office with current documentation of their disability from a qualified health professional.

It is the responsibility of the student to provide documentation to the Manager of the Disability Resource Center (DRS), which conforms to the Documentation Policy as part of the intake process. The Documentation Policy is included in the Student Handbook. Documentation must (1) verify the existence of a disability as defined under Section 504 and under the ADA ; and (2) establish a clear connection between the accommodations being requested and the effects of the disability.

Students must provide documentation that complies with all applicable requirements of the MCCCD Documentation Policy. If the DRS Manager advises a student that his/her documentation is incomplete, RSC reserves the right not to provide services or accommodations until all documentation specified in the Documentation Policy is provided. Students submitting only IEPs (Individual Educational Plans) or incomplete documentation, or if a particular accommodation request is not justified by the information provided in the student’s documentation, the student is responsible to pursue whatever additional documentation is required and to pay any costs thereof.

Services & Accommodations

RSC provides students with disabilities with accommodations or with modifications to policies and practices in order to ensure that students have an equal opportunity to participate in all RSC programs, services, and activities. The purpose of accommodations is not to ensure success, but to provide access and equal opportunity. The following policies and practices apply to all accommodations provided to students with disabilities at RSC.

The DRS Manager will initially determine the accommodations to be provided to each student upon all of the following:

  • the documentation provided by the student;
  • the in-take interview with student;
  • Consultation with course faculty, may be necessary, regarding the essential course elements and the manner in which student mastery of course material is to be evaluated.

Accommodations for each student will be determined on an individual basis considering all the factors mentioned above. Students with similar disabilities may not necessarily receive the same accommodations.

The initial accommodation determination of the DRS Manager may be modified for any number of reasons, such as the student tries the accommodation and it is not effective, or the Manager substitutes an equally effective accommodation for reasons of administrative efficiency.

A student who completes the in-take process with the DRS Manager is entitled to services and accommodations only from that date forward. RSC will generally not reexamine course work completed before the documentation of a disability even if the student can establish that they had a disability at the time of the course in question.

Service Animals

RSC adheres to the Maricopa Governance District Policy Manual with regards to the ADA identification of what constitutes a service animal. The DRS encourages students to register their service animal with the DRS, and a service-animal-in-training should be registered with campus Public Safety. While registration is not mandatory, it will help us know how to assist your animal should you encounter an emergency. We want to know that you and your animal are safe if an emergency occurs.
